Arriving on Andros

From Gavrio, the road north leads to farming villages and some of the island's best beaches. Heading south you pass the busy beaches of Agios Petros and Chrysi Ammos, then Batsi, the island's busiest fishing village for visitors, and ancient Palaiopoli.

At Stavropeda the main road splits three ways: left to Chora, the capital; straight on to Korthi; right to the beaches of Chalkolimionas and Apothikes.

Andros is large and its villages are spread out, so Fast Ferries suggests a vehicle if you want to explore. Without one, it says, staying around Gavrio or Batsi works. Bus times are not listed here; ask KTEL Andros.

In Chora

Chora sits on a peninsula ending in an islet with the medieval castle. Next to it stands the Tourlitis lighthouse on a rock in the sea: built in 1887, destroyed in the war and rebuilt in 1994. Chora also has archaeological, modern art, maritime and folklore museums.
